"I thought I saw a crocodile" Lydia Nichols
Dear Parent/Carer
It has been another action packed week at Applemore. Last Saturday the sun shone beautifully for our Year 9 DofE students, whilst Year 10 experienced an amazing mock interview day on Tuesday. Both Year groups were also treated to a really dynamic assembly on road safety on Thursday.
Alongside this, all Year groups experienced a little of the wonder of World Book Day. Teachers displayed their favourite books on their doors, Year 7's chose a brand new book for themselves to take home, lots of students and teachers created a 'CBeebies Bedtime Story' which will go out to all of our feeder Primary schools, we had badge making at lunchtime and one or two 'special guest' characters also joined the festivities! We also had the pleasure of judging Marchwood Junior School's 'Reading Out Loud' competition.
A reminder that next week we have our Academic Review Days Year 9 (Thurs) and 10 (Wed) and look forward to seeing you all.
With very best wishes
Clare

Well, what a fabulous day we had at Applemore! Students enjoyed spending their tokens to collect a free book from the LRC. These were definitely the most popular choices!
|
We had some very impressive door displays from our staff!
|
The LRC was a hive of activity at lunch, with students making their very own badges under the guidance of the wonderful Mr Wheatley.
|
One of the highlights of our WBD25 was our brilliant CBeebies Bedtime Stories. Staff and students did so well - click the button below to visit our YouTube page and watch them.
|
Students loved guessing the staff members, who were hiding behind their favourite books - can you guess who these are?

Computer Science
Mr Kemp's fantastic Year 10 Computer Scientists have been studying Computer Systems and The CPU this week in lessons. Activities have ranged from investigating embedded systems (such as dishwashers, microwaves, sat navs, etc.), common CPU components (such as control units, arithmetic logic units, and cache), and factors affecting CPU performance (such as number of cores, clock speed and cache size).
Here is a sample of their retrieval work from today...

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)
Year 7 students have been moving around and enjoying using kinaesthetic learning skills to perfect their use of opinion phrases. Human sentences!

X-Country
On Tuesday, we took four country cross country finalists to compete in Basingstoke at the District Finals Day. With over 150 runners in each age category, all competitors performed admirably and finished within the top 100 athletes. This means that our students are now placed within the top 100 runners throughout the whole of Hampshire!
We are beyond proud of the effort and determination shown by our students, well done and thank you to all!
Our athletes (pictured below) were: Alex (Yr.7), Ash (Yr.8), Elijah (Yr.8), and Kiera (Yr.7).

Netball
This evening, we travelled to Ballard School to play their U16 A&B teams. Despite two strong contests, both teams unfortunately lost. Our year 11 side lost narrowly with a final score = 7-4.
Some excelled fight was shown by all players. Four players of the matches were chosen: Lily C, Asenaca V, Lily T, and Phoebe B. Well played girls!

Arty News
This week has been more about photography, than art, for me, as I have a new puppy! He is called Montgomery, Monty for short, and I have taken dozens of photos of him already. The great thing about mobile phones is that you have a camera in your pocket. Why not try and record your week in photographs, or if you have a photogenic furry family member, take some photos of them. I'd love to see them.
In other news, I was visited by the HIAS inspector for Art, this week. She supports art education in schools in Hampshire, and she was so complementary about art at Applemore. She said, 'We reviewed a couple of year 11 portfolios that look stunning'. 'We looked at a sample of year ten portfolios that share some exciting experiments and real engagement...brilliant effort'. 'KS3 projects are looking good with some stimulating starting points that students are responding well to'. Well done and thank you to all students who are engaging so well in Art and Photography, and to the teachers who continue to inspire and support them!
Year 8 artists have now completed their Yayoi Kusama plates and exhibition posters, and they look AMAZING! I love it when a plan comes together, and these are better than I could have hoped for. Well done, year 8!!

Mock Interview Day 2025
On Tuesday, our whole Year 10 cohort took part in our annual Mock Interview Day. They spent the day writing their CV’s and preparing answers to interview questions before each having a 1-2-1 interview with a one of our invited professionals from a huge range of different businesses and careers. The whole year group showed such maturity and engagement throughout the entire process, and many of them went home with certificates for how well they interviewed. It was World Book Day this week, a perfect time to celebrate the joy of reading and explore how technology can support literacy. The way we engage with text has changed dramatically over the years. Whether reading captions on social media, instructions in a video game or an e-book on a digital device, technology plays a major role in modern literacy. To help struggling readers, many digital platforms offer tools that enhance readability by making text more accessible and engaging. This week’s free guide offers parents and educators ten top tips on how they can help young readers engage in text and foster a love for reading.
