A message from Ms Williams
Dear Parent/Carer
It has been a very sunny and successful week at Applemore, with some fantastic work produced and exciting opportunities. A huge congratulations to both the French and Spanish Year 11 GCSE students for their fantastic speaking exams and the Year 11 Art students who produced some stunning, creative and very individualised pieces. Alongside this, our Year 10’s are currently out on their Silver D of E Practice, Year 9 began their morning mentoring with some of our younger students and Years 7 and 8 took part in the Junior Maths Challenge. Congratulations to everyone!
As I am sure you are aware, there are some rapid changes in society because of smart device technology, and at Applemore we are looking to protect our young people and their education. From September there will therefore be some changes to our mobile phone policy to further keep the learning environment at school calm, safe and free from the distraction of phones. Thank you to the Parent Action group for meeting on this topic this week; more information to come prior to half term.
Have a lovely, slightly longer weekend everyone.
With very best wishes
Clare
Welcome back to the Summer Term at Applemore! This week the sun has been shining, we are back on the school field and there has been so much to be proud of. A huge congratulations to the Year 11 GCSE Photography students who worked tirelessly, with such determination, on their exam this week and produced some fantastic, creative and imaginative pieces. Well done to you all! Year 10 also made a fantastic start to their exam programme and demonstrated a real sense of self-belief and positivity, whilst Year 8 took part in an amazing and well-respected STEM day on Friday. They experimented with Lego Robotics, flew Drones and encountered some incredible Birds of prey. A huge thank you to the 'Ambitious for all Foundation' and 'Olivia Inspires', for making this possible.
Next week our Parent Action group takes place on Wednesday at 5.30pm in the LRC. This week we will be exploring the impact of smartphones and some changes to our school policy from September. A reminder that everyone is welcome to come along and join us!

Year 9 Food & Nutrition
The smells that were emanating from the food rooms this week were incredible (as Mr Kemp, who's computing suite is directly above, can confirm)! Under the wonderful tutelage of Mrs Ballard and Mrs Bruce, students gained a hands-on experience in proving, kneading, shaping, forming, probing baking, frying and seasoning. Well done everyone!

Junior Mathematical Challenge
|
Thursday 1st May saw a number of our mathematicians in Years 7 and 8 participating in the Junior Mathematical Challenge. This challenge, run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make students think. The challenge is undertaken by the top mathematicians in hundreds of schools around the country, and students who perform particularly well will receive a certificate and may be invited to complete in follow-on rounds too.
Well done to everyone who took part – we can’t wait to see how you get on.

On Thursday, people around the UK in many different types of authorities voted! You will have seen from one of our newsletters before Easter that we also held our own 'local election' recently here at Applemore - here were the results...
This week, we started the Summer Term. Wow! This was a short week, but a jam-packed one, with 29 photography pupils sitting their 10 hour period of independent study. Mr Kemp and I were so proud of the way that the young photographers conducted themselves during what was an intense two days of working in exam conditions. We were delighted with the amazing range of outcomes, the quality of skills on show and creativity demonstrated. Well done, everyone! Next week, we do it all again, but this time in Art, on Tuesday and Wednesday. I can't wait!
Also, this week, we have a feature in 'Art News', a Hampshire County Council publication which is shared throughout Hampshire schools and beyond. Not only is an article about year 7 artists featured, but we also get the headlines on the first page. Fabulous!
Have a lovely week, and if you feel like visiting the seaside, then please look out for the May Morris (please see Artist of the Week) exhibition at the fabulous Russell Coates Art gallery in Bournemouth. I'm visiting this weekend, and I'll report back in next week's Arty News.

This week has seen the completion of the Art exam, a 10 hour period of independent study in exam conditions. Despite taking place during the hottest days of the year, the young artists were absolutely wonderful, and the pieces they created are so imaginative, showcasing a range of skills and styles. I absolutely love the 10 hour exam, because it is a culmination of everything that has been learnt and all the hard work produced by students during the previous two years. Well done to all the art and photography year 11 students. We are so proud of you and your achievements.
As is now traditional, I give each art and photography exam student a good luck gift. This year, it was a hand-painted fridge magnet for each of the photography students and a mini-easel painting for each of the art students. As an art teacher, I still love to create art myself. Hopefully, in the years to come, the students will look at their 'Wheatley Original' and remember their time at Applemore with fondness.

Year 10 artists have now completed their first final pieces, responding to the work of Cas Holmes. They look fabulous, with outcomes which demonstrate mixed media; painting, felting, sewing and pastel work. The colours and designs are perfect for this time of year!
