A message from Ms Williams
Dear Parent/Carer
It may have only been 4 days, but this week has been a bumper of a week at Applemore, with so much to be proud of. Our Year 11's have begun their written exams with Drama, German and Sociology. We are all immensely proud of their determination, dedication and resilience. We have 8 GCSE's to come next week. Please do encourage your child to balance revision with some time outdoors and as always, let us know if anything is needed. We have also celebrated VE day with a fantastic turnout for our Grandparent tea party. Thank you to everyone who came, chatted, shared stories and enjoyed time together, it was magical. The afternoon also saw a coming together of street parties, music and games as a community. Being together, really is a wonderful place to be!
With very best wishes
Clare
Welcome back to the Summer Term at Applemore! This week the sun has been shining, we are back on the school field and there has been so much to be proud of. A huge congratulations to the Year 11 GCSE Photography students who worked tirelessly, with such determination, on their exam this week and produced some fantastic, creative and imaginative pieces. Well done to you all! Year 10 also made a fantastic start to their exam programme and demonstrated a real sense of self-belief and positivity, whilst Year 8 took part in an amazing and well-respected STEM day on Friday. They experimented with Lego Robotics, flew Drones and encountered some incredible Birds of prey. A huge thank you to the 'Ambitious for all Foundation' and 'Olivia Inspires', for making this possible.
Next week our Parent Action group takes place on Wednesday at 5.30pm in the LRC. This week we will be exploring the impact of smartphones and some changes to our school policy from September. A reminder that everyone is welcome to come along and join us!

Grandparents Tea Party
There was a lovely atmosphere in our canteen yesterday morning as over 80 grandparents joined their grandchildren for a spot of cake and a nice cuppa. Thank you to all the grandparents who attended - we hope you had a lovely time!

VE Day - Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have learnt about the role that Alan Turing played in breaking the Enigma Codes used by the German army during the Second World War, and his contributions to modern day Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Students then had a go at using Cipher Wheels to decrypt some encoded messages for themselves and did a fantastic job!

VE Day - History
We have enjoyed an exciting week full of shared family memories and activities relating to the end of the Second World War. Students have seen original footage from the Fall of Berlin and the celebrations which followed across the UK. They have also read moving accounts from diaries and letters of evacuated children and their responses to the end of the war in Europe.
We have received a letter from Veteran Commander John Eskdale (age 101) who recalls his wartime memories of being onboard HMS Charybdis when it was hit by a German torpedo. Lucky to survive, he was then sent to serve in the Far East. Members of our Year 7 and Year 8 will be writing back to him describing how the Applemore community has marked VE Day.
Following our celebrations this week there will be a display of photographs and war memories in room C012.

Year 11 Final Examinations
|
With the Year 11 Final Written Examinations starting in earnest from next week, a quick message from Mr Trueick...
- During the exam period, those students that are sitting morning exams (9.15am start) will be able to access the canteen prior to their exam for some FREE refreshments and a last minute pep talk from their subject teachers.
- Research shows that students that have breakfast before an exam perform better, including a 5% increase in results for those that are hydrated as it maximises focus!
- On offer we have: Hot Chocolate, Water, Bacon Rolls, Toast, Vegan Sausage rolls, plus more!
- Lunch is available every day from 12.25pm - 12.55pm before the afternoon exams for students to buy (if they are not Free School Meal students).
This week, we started the Summer Term. Wow! This was a short week, but a jam-packed one, with 29 photography pupils sitting their 10 hour period of independent study. Mr Kemp and I were so proud of the way that the young photographers conducted themselves during what was an intense two days of working in exam conditions. We were delighted with the amazing range of outcomes, the quality of skills on show and creativity demonstrated. Well done, everyone! Next week, we do it all again, but this time in Art, on Tuesday and Wednesday. I can't wait!
Also, this week, we have a feature in 'Art News', a Hampshire County Council publication which is shared throughout Hampshire schools and beyond. Not only is an article about year 7 artists featured, but we also get the headlines on the first page. Fabulous!
Have a lovely week, and if you feel like visiting the seaside, then please look out for the May Morris (please see Artist of the Week) exhibition at the fabulous Russell Coates Art gallery in Bournemouth. I'm visiting this weekend, and I'll report back in next week's Arty News.

It's been a shorter, but busy week, nevertheless, in the Art and Photography departments. Year 11 students have been completing their coursework, ready for final submissions. Their work is done, but mine is just beginning, as I now have to mark and moderate 120 folios of work. Well done to everyone who has completed the art and the photography courses. It's been emotional!
A couple of lesson highlights, for me, this week, have both featured sculpting. Firstly, the year 8 artists made their clay pinch pots, which morphed into some amazing outcomes, including football boots, love hearts, sharks, snakes, dragons and other amazing creations. One of the things I love about teaching art and photography at Applemore is the way that I provide a simple brief, which is then taken in so many different creative directions by the students. Amazing work!

The year 10 artists had fun in the sun, creating Andy Goldsworthy natural forms sculptural responses. They took found natural objects, like sticks and pine cones, and made free-standing sculptures. I loved seeing them in the zone, and being absorbed by the task. It was so inspiring to see. Thank you to everyone for making this week so special.
