"We should all consider each other as human beings and always respect each other" Malala Yousafzai
Dear Parent/Carer
This week our Heads of Year have been conducting assemblies on the second of our school values; respect. Although pertinent to each year group, the important messages which were shared across the community were to be kind, supportive of others, respect boundaries, show pride in yourself, lead by example and to work together to create friendships and value difference.
As we move into our end of term celebrations, it is important that we all exemplify this value and remember that Christmas is a time for family, reflection and support. We begin our celebrations with some events next week, our Christmas concert on Wednesday 11th at 7pm, Christmas jumper day (£1 donation for 'Save the Children') on Thursday 12th and our students are singing at Hythe Marina on the evening of Friday 13th at 6.30pm. This is followed by our Year 7 and 8 Christmas Disco on Tuesday 17th and Reindeer Dash on Thursday 19th - more details of which to come!
Thank you as always for your ongoing support.

On Wednesday, Year 8 stepped back in time to 1897 with a visit to Milestones Living Museum in Basingstoke. To support their study of the innovation of the Industrial Revolution and its social impact, a costumed guide showed how the Tasker Iron Foundry near Andover transformed the local area. As this was a rural area, the family built a village around the ironworks and included cottages for the workers, a meeting hall/Sunday School and importantly, a Board School.
Our students had an opportunity to wear the pinafore or waistcoat of a nineteenth century scholar and were given instruction in the 3Rs by a very strict 'Ma’am'. Students repeated each line of a poem, practised their 'letters' on a slate board and used an abacus. Thank you to Jake S and Mathilda K, who were two of the class monitors giving out equipment.
Later, students were able to explore the cobbled streets and shops decorated for Christmas, Victorian style. The arrival of the railways allowed ordinary people to have a day trip to the seaside. Applemore students enjoyed the pier attractions and slot machines as much as those that lived 150 years earlier.
There are many family events at Milestones in the weeks before Christmas - click the button below to visit their website! #LearnIt #LoveIt #LiveIt

Literacy Focus - Capitalising
|
Capitalising proper nouns is crucial for clear and effective writing and at Applemore we are committed to ensuring students uphold high standards of Literacy in all areas of their learning. We welcome support from parents and carers to support their children in maintaining high levels of literacy at all times. Proper nouns, which refer to specific people, places, or things, deserve the visual distinction that capitalisation provides. Tiny adjustments, monumental results!

Year 7 were focusing on an introduction to university and student life, while Year 8 explored different courses and pathways. Our students worked on activities in groups across a range of tasks and challenges.
Interactive activities were supported by Student Ambassadors to give our students opportunities to ask questions and learn more about the experience of university. Thank you to Ms Papachristu for organising this superb workshop.

Art News
This week has been another busy and creative week in the Art Department. Tuesday saw the year 11 GCSE artists completing their mock exam, with lots of incredible contrasting final piece outcomes; on Wednesday, the Art Club artists painted, laminated, cut up and took home bookmarks with a winter landscape theme. I think they look amazing. If you would like to take part in Art Club, Mrs Brearley and I would love to see you on Wednesday's from 3pm until 4pm.
Finally, year 10 artists started to paint on canvas for the first time, creating abstract landscapes. I've never seen them so focused! It was a fantastic lesson. Have a lovely weekend and remember to be creative. It's great for the soul!

According to findings from the NHS, 1 in 5 children in England suffer from a probable mental health issue, with 420,000 treated for such problems every month. With such high numbers of young people in need of mental health support, it’s perhaps unsurprising that plenty of them have turned to using apps intended to help them through these kinds of challenges. Unfortunately, there are plenty of risks associated with these services from data collection to a potentially unhelpful, impersonal experience. It can be difficult to know how to keep young users safe as they navigate these services, but this week’s guide provides expert advice on how to do exactly that, while also breaking down the specific safety concerns of mental health and wellbeing apps.
