Dear Parent & Carers

I have always believed in the importance of marking a moment. Time goes by so quicky and before we know it we are onto the next thing, without the opportunity to live in the moment and truly celebrate it. Yesterday we marked the end of our fantastic Year 11’s 5 year journey at Applemore, with a really wonderful leaver’s assembly.

Thank you to the ‘Fairies’ for your amazing musical talents, to the year 11 tutors for your really heartfelt speeches and to Miss Smith who has led you all so well, right from transition to your final exams. Prom still to come next week!

Congratulations also to our fantastic Year 10’s who have received such positive feedback from their employers on work experience. Finally, we really look forward to marking the year with you all on Monday, at our Academic Review Day.

What a couple of weeks for our year 10s! Our staff have been blown away with just how they have taken to the world of work. We've received many-many incredible comments from their employers, which we will be sharing with you all in due course. For now, check out the amazing photos of our students at work.

Thanks to all the students, parents & carers, and staff who attended yesterday's Leavers Assembly. It was a wonderful afternoon of reflection and celebration of the year 11s five year journey at Applemore.

We have had an exciting week this week handing out our Gold and Silver invitations for Rewards Week 2024. If your child has not received an invitation this is a reminder that Bronze invitations will be out next week and the Heads of Year do have 5 wildcards too!

There will be an ice cream van on site during Rewards Week so please give some spending money to your child if they want one.  This will be for those students who have activities on that day and for everyone on Sports Day. We are looking forward to an exciting week where our wonderful students receive rewards for all their hard work and good attendance.

Well done to our NEW Learning Resource Centre Ambassadors, who were selected this week to assist Ms Charrett with the running of the LRC from September! Here they are pictured with Ms Charrett.

Here is our wonderful D-DAY 80 rocks that students painted recently, now situated in the Remembrance Garden.

This week's spotlight is on a cross-curricular task that Year 8 French students completed with Mr Kemp. Their task set out by Mrs Weller, was to create a montage of images using graphic design software, which showed famous landmarks in Paris that will be seen throughout the 2024 Olympics. Our standout students work is shown above.

A few weekends ago, Oliver W (Yr.7), AJ V (Yr.8), and Orrin S (Yr.9) represented Applemore at the Alresford Toy Train Show - one of the biggest shows in the South of England. The boys ran an 8" x 8" layout called 'Woodley Castle' all day, which is designed for children to operate. They had to encourage young people to operate the layout and show them how to use the controls.

If your child is interested in model railways, please direct them to see Mr Smart, who runs a weekly club (see our Extra-Curricular Clubs section below for a link to our Enrichment page on the school's website).

Life Skills at Applemore College aims to provide students with knowledge, skills and information for them to thrive throughout adolescence and into adulthood. This is done through targeted, dedicated sessions during the college week.

In our sessions this week, our KS3 students focused on British Values (Years 7 & 8), and Healthy Relationships (Year 9). Below are some links related to these topics should you wish to discuss the topics studied this week with your child:

Monday is fast approaching! A reminder that the meeting will be an opportunity to review the academic progress made by your child across all subjects throughout the year, plus set targets for the coming year. In addition, parents/carers will be able to update their child's personal details, medical information/care plans, check/replace any expired medications we hold, plus complete our latest parent/carer view survey.

I began my career at Applemore over three years ago, where I started my journey as a Learning Support Assistant - mainly situated in the science department. I gained excellent experience and moved to an Assistant Head of Year; I really enjoyed this role within the school as I got to work with our Heads or Year delivering support to our students.

My journey within Applemore has now taken me to the new position of Careers and Learning Resource Centre Manager. I am excited to have this opportunity as I enjoy helping students with their vision for their future and pathways post-Applemore. I'm looking forward to the new academic year to be able to give some great new opportunities to our students.

What you didn't know about Ms Charrett away from work...

Outside of school life I'm an enthusiastic football mum who supports Saints. I also enjoy horse riding and walking my dog (Forest the Old English Bulldog).

A 2023 report from the Gambling Commission found that 40% of 11–to 17-year-olds had some experience of gambling in the preceding 12 months. That’s a significant number of children and young people involved in an over 18s activity. Engagement and exposure to gambling can impact one's finances, mental health and wellbeing. It is crucial we are all aware of the risks and know how to protect and support our children. 
 
It is quite challenging to protect our children against exposure to gambling at any time, but especially around major sport events like Euro 2024. This week’s Wake up Wednesday guide tackles the most prominent risks that gambling poses to young people, and explains how best to protect against them.
