What a visit! What an experience! What a lifelong memory!
32 students from Year 9 & 10 visited the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar to help volunteer at a local oversubscribed primary school; the school is so big it has a morning and afternoon cohort as they can’t fit all the children in! After a range of fundraising events both in school and personal challenges e.g. sponsored walks & bike rides, talent shows, prize draws etc. the students raised over £2000 each for the volunteer experience to Zanzibar. The determination shown by these students was incredible and a clear example of how hard work pays off.
The students were such great ambassadors of Applemore and potentially many a teacher in the making! The students taught a range of subjects to the children in Zanzibar including Maths, English, PE, Geography and Science and the teachers there were ever so grateful. Using nothing but a chalkboard, body language and their own enthusiasm for learning, they imparted new learning to the students in Zanzibar and see them come up, write on the board, repeat the words, answer correctly with a beaming smile was amazing. It wasn’t just teaching but also learning for Applemore students, they learnt some Swahili from the children who were keen to share.
While teaching other students were busy doing with the construction project of creating a new pathway and garden. The staff were so impressed with the students and how much they accomplished so quickly…we even extended our path to the next section as they were working so efficiently. Concrete breaking, levelling, digging, cement, sand and water mixing and planting to create the new Applemore garden.
Great memories were made with the extra experiences away from the school. Student went monkey watching in the jungle and mangrove forests, snorkelling in the Indian Ocean, visiting the home of local school children, tour of Stone Town and a visit to the night market for ice cream and crepes!
